I was swimming laps at Manuka Pool in Canberra’s inner-south when I was struck with the inspiration for this photoshoot. The pool is beautiful and unique to Canberra. It has been maintained in its Art Deco style since opening in 1931.
As I swam, the early summer sun was making the water sparkle with each ripple. The contrasting black lines, coloured lane ropes and chrome handrails stand out in the heritage building: the perfect meeting of old and new. Perhaps the perfect backdrop for a maternity photoshoot?!
I put out a call to my followers to see if any heavily pregnant women would be willing to participate in a water-based maternity shoot. I was thrilled when Danii reached out! She grew up in Manuka and learnt to swim at this very pool. Pregnant with her second child, this felt like a full-circle moment. A fitting way to honour her body and the life growing within (who was welcomed into the world a few weeks later!).
